An unexpected knock at the door can be a nice surprise when it’s a friend, neighbor, or the flower delivery guy, but that’s not always the case. Criminals don’t always break windows to gain entry to your home … sometimes they walk right in through the front door. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can very easily pose as a salesperson just to find out if someone is home. It’s extremely important to stay alert each and every time you answer the door to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Here are a few simple tips that will go a long way toward preventing potential disasters:
Make sure to keep your storm doors locked even when the entry door behind it is safely secured. When you open your front door, you don’t want to make it easy for a would-be criminal to let themselves in, or worse, harm you and your loved ones! By keeping the storm door locked, you keep one extra barrier between you and the bad guy … giving you those few essential moments to protect yourself and trigger the alarm!
If you don’t have a storm door, make sure to look out of a nearby window or a peephole first to identify the person. If their face is obscured, or they’re facing the wrong way, talk to them through the door and ask who it is. It seems obvious, but most of the time, we take for granted that it’s someone we know or are expecting … a dangerous habit that’s easy to fix!
If you must open the door for a stranger, keep a security chain locked and open the door just enough to find out who they are and what they want. If they have a legitimate reason to be on the premises (they work for the utility company, or they are a police officer, for example), they’ll be happy to show you their id. And you should never be afraid to ask.
Be sure to follow up with the organization they claim to represent. If the person claims to be from the water company, verify their claim. Criminals can be very convincing, and it doesn’t take much to make a realistic looking fake id. Don’t be shy about protecting yourself and your home!
Most importantly, make it known that your home is protected with a life safety and security system from Damar Security. Street facing security signs help make homes far less appealing to would-be thieves.
